The Star Wars franchise began with the George Lucas-directed Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, which was released in 1977.
Over the years, fans have not been privy to the original cut as there have been changes made to the currently available version. However, there is good news for all the fans as the original cut will be released at BFI's Film on Film Festival.
Star Wars original cut to be released at BFI
The original cut of George Lucas's 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope will be released to the public for the first time in nearly three decades. Reports suggest that the British Film Institute (BFI) will be screening it in their Film on Film Festival section. It will take place on June 12, 2025, on the event's opening day at London's Southbank Theater.
BFI has also stated that they will show archival footage and some deleted scenes. In a statement, BFI said that viewers will be seeing the film:
"exactly as experienced by audiences on its original release, screening from one of the precious handful of dye transfer IB Technicolor prints produced for the first British release, preserved in the BFI National Archive."
The original version of the film has not been available in the public domain for ages, as updated versions are uploaded on streaming platforms. George Lucas ensured canon versions were replaced by the updated versions. Certain sections of fans disliked the newer version of the Star Wars trilogy. This was mainly because of several digital changes, including replacing a human being with Jabba the Hutt.
Lucas wrote and directed the first Star Wars film, which came out in 1977. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing more than $700 million at the box office. It is the fourth film in the Skywalker Saga. This was followed by The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, which were released in 1980 and 1983.
