English singer Jade Thirlwall is an inspiration for many budding singers. She is a former member of the girl group Little Mix which had artists like Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the singer not only breaks down her journey in the industry but also discusses her roots.
While talking about the girl group, she mentioned that when the band members worked on their solo material, others supported the decision despite keeping plans for their professional careers confidential. Jade Thirlwall said,
“We knew we needed the space to figure out who we were without feeling influenced by one another. I didn’t want to compare or hear their music and think ‘God, am I doing the right thing?’ I just didn’t want to know.”
Social media users shared their reactions to the singer’s revelation. One X user wrote,
“Their sisterhood is unmatched. They really go out of their way to make sure that their relationship with each other comes first before anything else.”
Social media users looked forward to knowing more about their solo journeys while others pointed out that the singers worked better as a group than as soloists.
“I love how they have different styles as soloists Literally mothers,” a person commented on X.
“Interesting! Can't wait to hear more about their solo journeys,” a social media user wrote.
“They work better together than apart,” a netizen remarked.
Netizens appreciated Jade’s point of view as they said it was a good way to move ahead in careers.
“honestly smart move. comparing yourself to others just messes with your head and makes you doubt everything,” another X user pointed out.
“Great insight from JADE! It's wise to carve out your own path post-group to truly find individual identity in music,” an online user reacted.
Jade Thirlwall said she was scared to promote her Arab heritage
During her time with Little Mix, Jade Thirlwall didn’t realize she could have been vocal about her racial identity. However, the fear of perpetuating negative stereotypes about Arab people held her back.
Reflecting on this, she regretted not embracing her heritage earlier, acknowledging that she could have been the representation she once needed. However now, she actively champions causes close to her heart, from participating in Black Lives Matter protests and pro-Palestine rallies to serving as an LGBTQ+ rights ambassador for UK charity Stonewall.
The members of Little Mix were aware a year before that the group would disband, allowing them time to prepare individually. For Thirlwall, adjusting to writing outside the framework of Little Mix was a challenge after a decade with the group.
She immersed herself in creating music to discover her sound quickly as she was getting worried about the stillness that would follow. This proactive approach worked for her, as she presented potential labels with a clear artistic vision.
After signing with RCA under Sony, she was surprised to be given the freedom to take her time before releasing solo music. Reflecting on that period, Jade Thirlwall recognized that rushing to release music immediately after the group disbanded would have added unnecessary pressure to live up to the success of Little Mix.
