The Wild Robot arrived in theaters in September 2024 and turned out to be a blockbuster. The sci-fi animated film from DreamWorks Animation is based on Peter Brown’s eponymous book series and follows Roz, a robot that lands on an uninhabited island and learns to be friends with the native animals.

Apart from box office success, the film also received critical acclaim and has earned nods at various awards, including the Oscars. Considering its popularity, the audience is wondering if a sequel to the film will be made.

Jeff Hermann, who produced The Wild Robot, has now opened up about a potential sequel. He said while a second part of the franchise is not in the works officially, he would love to have the opportunity to continue Roz’s story as Peter Brown’s novel series features two more books.

The Wild Robot recently won the Best Animated Film trophy at the Saturn Awards. At the event, producer Jeff Hermann was interviewed by The Direct and was asked if there would be a second installment in the franchise.

Peter Brown’s book series is a trilogy. The animated feature is based on the first book, while the other two novels – The Wild Robot Escapes and The Wild Robot Protects – can still be adapted into potential sequels.

Hermann said as of now, a second installment in the film series has not been greenlit. However, he is willing to take the story forward by adapting the second book into the second film. The producer said:

“I wish I had official word. It’s no secret that there are more books that directly continue the story of the book and we position the movie in such a way where it kind of lines up with where the territory that the second book goes. We would love the opportunity to do that. There might be talks happening, but nothing I can officially say at this point.”

Hermann added a possible sequel can delve deeper into the subjects of environment and artificial intelligence:

“I think to go forward, you kind of now have to go to those territories and you have to explore that and see where that leads. And that can be exciting and scary and all of those things.”

Hermann’s statement comes four months after the first film's director, Chris Sanders, revealed they were planning to make a second installment. He told Deadline in October 2024:

“100% yes there are absolutely plans for a second one.”

However, DreamWorks Animation has not made any announcement about the sequel. Meanwhile, the first film continues to win laurels. Apart from its Saturn Award win, the movie has bagged nominations at the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, and the BAFTA Awards.

The movie features the voices of Lupita Nyong'o, Kit Connor, Catherine O'Hara, Pedro Pascal, Bill Nighy, Mark Hamill, Stephanie Hsu, Randy Thom, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames.

The Wild Robot is streaming on Peacock.
