Coralie Fargeat's The Substance is returning to the US theaters in the coming weeks. It makes up for a perfect excuse to watch this wild masterwork again on the big screen.

This surreal body horror film is one of the surprise success stories in the recent past and is one of the best movies of 2024. It is not common to see a film as bizarre as this one to win over the audience. Fargeat's film broke that pattern.

That is not the only convention that the film managed to smash. The film itself questions the conventional definitions of beauty in regard to aging. It shows Demi Moore, a seasoned female celebrity, playing another seasoned female celebrity grappling with anxieties about her self-worth and appearance.

The official synopsis reads:

A fading celebrity takes a black-market drug: a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself.

It leads to a visceral experience that reminds people of everything from David Cronenberg's films to the iconic scene from Sissy Spacek's Carrie.

After raking up several nominations in American and European award shows, The Substance is set to return to the theaters. Coralie Fargeat's film is set to be re-released in the United States on January 17.

The Substance: More to know about this award-winning body-horror film

Coralie Fargeat's The Substance is about to make a comeback to the US theaters. It is all set to be re-released on January 17 in more than 350 theaters across the United States. So, the fans who want to experience the film on a big screen can make use of this opportunity. Whether someone wants to watch it for the first time or once again, this is their chance for a unique experience.

While a surrealist film, The Substance's viral success also feels quite surreal, considering where it came from. It was written, directed, and co-produced by a French female filmmaker and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Its subject matter is far from conventional and is filled with a horrifying amount of gore.

Still, it has earned over $79.3 million, $16 million of which is from the domestic box office. It has also led its leading star, Demi Moore, to a Golden Globe win and is inching closer to receiving a bunch of nominations at the Oscars. While it is currently available to stream on Mubi, the US audience can now also appreciate it in a cinema and have a one-of-a-kind communal experience!
