Steve Martin took to Instagram on February 20 to post a photo of Martin Short and Maya Rudolph kissing and mentioned that both caught COVID during Saturday Night Live's 50 Anniversary Special. He also announced that in light of this news, they will have to reschedule two dates on their joint The Dukes of Funnytown tour.
In the caption, Martin mentioned:
"Maya had Covid. Marty has Covid. I wonder why? The SNL 50 Covid curse is real."
The Dukes of Funnytown Tour was scheduled for Durham on February 22 and Knoxville on February 23. Martin announced the new dates as 10/17, Durham, and 10/18, Knoxville, and noted that they would "be funnier then, anyway."
Martin and Short both delivered a monologue during the anniversary special. Martin hosted the show 16 times, and Short starred during the 1984-85 season. The anniversary special episode received an impressive viewership of 14.8 million across NBC and the Peacock streaming platform.
Other A-listers who attended the anniversary special on February 16 include Meryl Stree, Ryan Reynolds, and Blake Lively.
Neither Short nor Rudolph have confirmed the news or commented on Martin's post.
SNL host Colin Jost jokes about a "quademic" amidst Martin Short's COVID diagnosis
SNL regular host Colin Jost, during a Weekend Update segment on the show, joked about a health and a "quademic" days before Steve Martin confirmed Martin Short and Maya Rudolph's Covid diagnosis.
In his segment, Jost noted:
"Health experts are facing increased pressure this winter in the face of outbreaks of COVID, the flu, RSV and norovirus, which they're calling a quademic. So we did the smart thing and packed every beloved entertainer over 60 into one tiny space."
Martin Short helped SNL during its tenth season after the show's quality was in danger since the exit of Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo. SNL proved to be Short's springboard to a successful career in film and TV.
Martin Short's SNL characters included manic-man child and Wheel of Fortune fan Ed Grimley, which he borrowed from his SCTV days. He also gained recognition for his impressions of celebrities like Jerry Lewis and Katherine Hepburn. While Steve Martin had appeared on SNL 35 times and hosted the show 16 times, he was never a cast member of the popular Sketch Comedy series.
