Robert Downey Jr.'s role in Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo Brothers, is the highlight of Marvel's sixth phase as the Iron Man actor, who died as the hero, returns to the MCU as one of its biggest antagonists, Doctor Doom.

In the comics, Doom is the arch-enemy of the Fantastic Four, and speculations surrounding the character's launch in the MCU have been abuzz ever since Downey joined the project. Many fans have theorized that he might use Stark's identity to get into the MCU, while some have even theorized that there are variants of Doom in the universe that are actually Tony Stark.

Joe and Anthony Russo, who are the creative masterminds behind this project, opened up on how they are planning to relaunch Robert in the MCU again. Speaking to Omelete, a Brazilian outlet, in an interview, Anthony said,

“We have an amazing group of collaborators again, some old and some new. We’re very excited. It’s a difficult movie, there’s a lot of expectations on it.”

Continuing, Joe Russo teased how Doctor Doom might be portrayed in the film as he added,

“The only thing I’ll say about the movie is this: we love villains who think they are the heroes of their own stories. That’s when they become three-dimensional and when they become more interesting. And when you have an actor like Robert Downey Jr., you have to create a well-shaped, three-dimensional character for the audience. That’s where a lot of our focus is going.”

The Russo Brothers' return to the MCU

The Russo Brothers started off their legacy in the MCU with Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014. The duo continued to create more with Marvel as they worked on Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

However, after Avengers: Endgame, the Russos exited Marvel and continued to work on other projects. With Avengers: Doomsday, they are returning to direct the film, marking it an exciting phase for MCU fans who have appreciated their work since the beginning.

In the same interview they talked about how they needed the right project to return to the MCU, and after much conversation, the right story, and the right casting, they finally decided to return to their hot seats. Talking to Omelette, Joe said,

"That was Kevin [Feige]. And interestingly enough about that is that conversation was had a while ago. Robert [Downey Jr.] tried to talk us into doing it, and we said, 'No' ... We just didn't have a story. We didn't have a way in, right? We were resistant for a while."

He then continued to explain how the right idea brought them back as he added,

"And then one day ["Avengers: Endgame" writer] Steve McFeely, who's one of our key collaborators, said, 'I have an idea.' And he called us in pit and we said, 'That's the story. That story has to be told. It's a really powerful story.'"

Regarding the duration of the upcoming two Avengers films, the filmmakers recently confirmed that Doomsday would be two and a half hours long.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to release on May 1, 2026.
