The portal scene in Avengers: Endgame has a fanbase that goes beyond just the Marvel community. And then, Steve catches the Mjolnir, just before saying those magical words that still give the chills to whoever listens to it...

Avengers, assemble!

And then, Alan Silvestri's music follows.

While this iconic scene has cemented its position in Marvelites' hearts forever, it was supposed to be different than what we saw in the film. The Russo Brothers, Anthony and Joe, who directed the film, recently revealed how they planned to pull it off. The scene is one of the most outstanding ones in Avengers: Endgame, which, as of now, is the second highest-grossing movie of all time. While fans wait to see if the sequels will go beyond, here's a recap of all the brainstorming that went into the scene.

The camera was supposed to rotate around Chris Evans in Avengers: Endgame

It begins with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) scattered and hopeless as they face Thanos' army, and the camera then cuts to Chris Evans, who hears Falcon's (Anthony Mackie) transmission. Then, a portal opens.

The Russo Brothers had something different on their minds for the Avengers: Endgame scene. Joe Russo explained in an interview with Empire magazine recently:

"The original concept was that the camera rotated around Steve Rogers and everybody was collected behind him."

Given the scale of the scene, it was a hard nut to crack but the Russo Brothers did crack it. Although it became a subject of debate among the creators, they worked together, lost in their crafts, and pulled it off.

Avenger: Endgame co-editor Jeffrey Ford has explained the filming of the portal scene before. To expand upon what Russo Brothers presented, the team was supposed to film it in a way so that the audience would see everything from Rogers' perspective. It sort of evolved as the conversation and development advanced and eventually the scene was born.

Creators had another knot to untie, which was the screen time of the scene. Basically, this was something that they had to keep in check to give the Avengers: Endgame characters the ample time and slow it down. As Marvel VFX supervisor Dan Deleeuw explained to ComicBook, this was necessary to...

"Give the audience a chance to welcome their heroes back."

There were so many ideas that never ended up in the Avengers: Endgame scene. One of these ideas included bringing Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne to the assembled crew, but then there was only so much the creators of the film could do.
