The United States is currently boiling under the H1-B visa row, and podcast host Myron Gaines recently called out Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy after they were attacked by their party members.

This visa is among the most competitive in the US Immigration system’s complex catalog. It allows US companies to hire foreign professionals with specialized skills, especially in the technology sector.

Over the years, critics have claimed that the system does not leave American workers with jobs and suppresses wages besides exploiting foreign professionals.

Vivek Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur and politician, has also been critical of the system. He said the lottery-based selection process for the visa should be replaced with a merit-based system.

Elon Musk also shares similar views regarding the matter and has favored merit-based reforms. However, other politicians and leaders from MAGA have pointed out that even skilled immigration would affect jobs for Americans.

Myron Gaines also weighed in on the ongoing debate. He shared an X post on December 26, 2024, and wrote:

“Holy sh*t. The Rajs, Singhs, and Ishaans are assembling and are MAD over this H1B drama... @elonmusk and @VivekGRamaswamy are about to turn this country into the United States of Jeets.”

Vivek Ramaswamy’s proposed changes regarding the H1-B visa could mean that merit-based selection benefits highly skilled professionals with advanced degrees and niche experience. This could also end the country-quota system and increase competition.

Outgoing President Joe Biden relaxed H1-B visa rules thereby allowing more flexibility

It goes back to when President Joe Biden announced an overhaul of the H1-B visa program to accelerate the application process and impose penalties on companies that abuse the system. Top companies like Google, Amazon, and Tesla have greatly benefitted from the visa.

The new H1-B rule attempts to modernize the rule by boosting enforcement. With the new rule in place, employers will now be required to demonstrate the legitimacy of the specialty of the occupation role at the time of applying.

On the other hand, those research-based organizations will qualify for H1-B cap exemptions.

There will be automatic extensions for students transitioning from F1 to H1-B so that there are no disruptions in the employment status until April 1 of the fiscal year.

These new rules will be enforced from January 17, 2025. This year itself, over 85,000 visas were approved but more than 400,000 applications were received.

Elon Musk took a rather utilitarian stance on the decision to get highly-skilled professionals saying it would benefit everyone. Taking to X on December 25, 2024, he wrote:

“Think of this like a pro sports team: if you want your TEAM to win the championship, you need to recruit top talent wherever they may be. That enables the whole TEAM to win.”

Vivek Ramaswamy also expressed his support on X on December 26, 2024, highlighting that American culture has long prioritized mediocrity over excellence.

He argued this mindset begins early, emphasizing that a society that values the prom queen over a math olympiad champion or a jock over a valedictorian cannot expect to produce top engineers.
