The Dougal Wilson-directed adventure comedy was first released in the United Kingdom on November 8, 2024, by Studiocanal. It was followed by a release in France on February 5, 2025, and February 14 in the United States.
The franchise is doing well at the box office on a global level right after the third installment had its premiere. Amid positive critical response, the third installment has been raking in the moolah. Here is its official synopsis:
Paddington returns to Peru to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now resides at the Home for Retired Bears. With the Brown family in tow, a thrilling adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey.
Paddington franchise doing well at BO
The Paddington franchise is doing well at the box office globally and has overtaken several popular Hollywood franchises. As per Collider, the US release has skyrocketed the overall collection. All three films have collectively minted over $735 million globally. This number puts this franchise ahead of several big names like the Mad Max franchise, Austin Powers, S*x and the City, etc.
Paddington In Peru has earned $45 million at the UK box office, taking its overall global tally to $130 million (as of February 17, 2025). If this momentum continues, we can expect the franchise to surpass the total collections of Bridget Jones, Insidious, and Predator series.
The film has also benefitted from good reviews; it has a 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The previous two installments were also well received.
More about the franchise
The franchise began in 2014 with the first installment, directed by Paul King. Produced by David Heyman, the film starred Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, and Jim Broadbent, while Ben Whishaw voiced the titular bear. It was based on the namesake character created by Michael Bond.
The film was a success, leading to a sequel titled Paddington 2, which was released in 2015. Paddington In Peru is the third installment of the franchise. Unlike the previous installments, this one is directed by Dougal Wilson. Wilson spoke to the AU Review about how he came to be associated with the film because Paul was busy with another project:
"When I got the call that Paul was busy doing Wonka, and they needed someone to do number 3, I was a bit taken aback."
