Singer and actor Usher shared his thoughts about Kendrick Lamar’s upcoming Super Bowl halftime performance. During his appearance on the Jennifer Hudson Show on February 4, 2025, Hudson reminisced about the Love in This Club singer’s previous performance at the 2024 Super Bowl.
She asked whether he had a conversation with Kendrick Lamar, to which he replied that he didn’t have a chance to speak to him. Nonetheless, he talked to others including the producers and Kendrick Lamar’s creative team. Usher said:
“The one thing that I would say is, you know, savor the moment because you get obsessed in trying to build the best performance but you don’t realize that it’s really about enjoying it.”
He continued:
“It might not be perfect, everything may not go exactly the way it’s supposed to but if you are in your mind and like stuck trying to make something perfect, you are not going to look up smell the flowers and realize, wait a minute, I am here.”
Usher encouraged Kendrick Lamar to be present and hoped that the Not Like Us singer would use the moment to his best. He praised Lamar saying he has been incredible in creating a benchmark for what it means to be an artist and culturally relevant.
He hoped that Kendrick Lamar would maximize the moment. He is set to perform at Super Bowl LIX, airing on FOX on February 9, 2025. Lamar won five Grammy Awards for Not Like Us, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Music Video. In his acceptance speech, he said:
“This is what it’s about man, because at the end of the day, nothing is more powerful than rap music. We are the culture, it’s gonna always stay here and live forever.”
Usher wants Kendrick Lamar to play the hits during the Super Bowl halftime performance
In September 2024, while appearing on the LiveKellyandMark show, Usher advised Kendrick Lamar to play all his hits. When asked whether he would bring out Drake, he said:
“You chose violence this morning. Is that what we doing here?”
When asked how the Super Bowl ranks in his career during the interview with Jennifer Hudson, he said it was the ultimate achievement. Performing on that stage is a dream for many, a sign that an artist has built a strong enough catalog to entertain the entire world.
He said no matter how many stages he performed before, nothing compared to that moment. That night would mark the biggest audience of his life. Hudson wanted to know how he narrowed it down, given the huge number of hits. Usher said it was his obsession with the performance that made him do almost 100 edits. However, it ultimately came down to 13 minutes of him enjoying himself.
His performance at the 2024 Super Bowl began with his 2004 hit Caught Up and featured other fan favorites like My Boo, You Got It Bad, and Bad Girl. Usher previously performed at the Super Bowl in 2011 as a guest during the Black Eyed Peas’ halftime show in Arlington, Texas.
