Rapper and songwriter Ice Cube seems disappointed with the Hollywood executives. Recently, during a conversation with NFL superstar, Cam Newton, in a podcast interview, he discussed his career and other endeavors.
Besides rapping, Ice Cube is a film writer of the famous Friday movie in 1995 and its sequel in 1999. Though he wanted to make another one in 2024, he revealed that higher-ups from Hollywood did not want to do the movie the way he wanted it done. He said,
“Like, I know what it needs to be, and they don't.”
The rejection of the movie has drawn reactions from social media users. One X user wrote,
“Let’s not fool ourselves. The last movie wasn’t good. Just not anywhere near the same feel.”
Social media users suggested ideas for a new Friday movie while others criticised Hollywood.
“Why does Cube need Hollywood to greenlight a project.. that’s crazy,” a social media user asked.
“Craig and Day-Day are older now. The new Friday should be about their kids or something,” a netizen pointed out.
“Everybody that has never written a script before has a better opinion that a successful Hollywood writer,” a person commented on X.
Netizens advised Ice Cube to make the movie, while X users were unhappy about the incident.
“Why doesn’t he make the movie himself, why even use the Hollywood execs? He has enough money to make it happen,” another X user asked.
“Damn. They’ll get it right, cuz a Smokey ran rehab facility don’t sound right ngl,” an online user remarked.
“I feel like my childhood was robbed,” an internet user reacted.
Ice Cube revealed Toby Emmerich didn’t greenlight his Friday movie
While speaking to Cam Newton, Ice Cube shared he was frustrated about the challenges he faced trying to get his project done. He explained that Toby Emmerich, who was in charge for years, refused to greenlight the movie. As a result, despite writing a script and presenting his vision, the idea was dismissed.
Cube revealed that he wanted to bring Chris Tucker back for the film but was not encouraged to do so because the executives claimed that jail wasn’t a funny concept and that the script involved too much time set in prison.
Ice Cube disagreed and felt that the people could not grasp the potential of his story. He pointed out the irony when other successful projects like Orange Is the New Black and Let’s Go to Prison emerged later, proving his idea had merit.
Cam Newton then asked why he didn't approach another film company or filmmaker to make the film. The rapper explained the logistical conditions, as the film was originally made through New Line, which holds the rights to all sequels. While he tried to pitch the project to another studio, it had to go through New Line, which created a significant roadblock.
In other news, Ice Cube has returned to music with the release of his new album, Man Down, marking a significant moment for his work in the rap scene.
