Street Fighter has been one of the most popular video games in recent years, and the video game is finally getting its own movie. It was previously announced that Danny and Michael Philippou would be directing the film. However, after multiple conflicts, Kitao Sakurai has now been added to the team as the film's director.
Legendary is co-developing and co-producing the adaptation with Capcom, which is also the publisher and creator of the video game. Sony plans to release the movie on March 20, 2026.
Although Sakurai's involvement and the new Street Fighter live-action adaptation's release date are all we know, it appears that Capcom and Legendary intend to take a slight detour from the main fighting game brand. Warcraft, Detective Pikachu, and A Minecraft Movie are just a few examples of Legendary's massive AAA video game titles successfully brought to the big screen. Knowing their legacy and expertise in this field, fans can rest assured that Street Fighter is in good hands.
The series started with the 1987 arcade game Street Fighter and established a high standard for arcade fighting games with Street Fighter II, making it one of the most enduring fighting video game brands ever. When it was first published in 1991, the game was the first to provide players with a choice of characters and fighting styles, which completely changed one-on-one gameplay. The most recent game in the series, Street Fighter 6, was published in June 2023 and took up the 2023 Game Awards' best fighting game title.
