Camila Cabello’s C,XOXO has been a fan favorite since its release in June 2024. According to Pitchfork, the album channels the essence of albums like MOTOMAMI, Blonde, or Something to Give Each Other, using a collage-like approach to showcase the singer's taste and artistic vision.
However, critics were not at bay, as many likened the album to Charli XCX’s Brat. The singer responded to these claims during a recent interview with Nylon Entertainment. Camila Cabello reflected on the misconceptions about her album, stemming from a comment she made about incorporating hyper-pop elements.
While she admired artists like Charli XCX, she emphasized the album’s range, highlighting tracks like Twentysomethings, a guitar-driven song about heartbreak in New York. Her response has drawn various reactions from social media users with one X user writing,
“like the hate is so forced. i don’t see any songs like june gloom and godspeed that are the same on the Brat album.”
Social media users agreed with Camila Cabello's statement while some netizens called her the queen of ‘hyperpop.’
“exactly i luv it is the only hyperpop song but stan twt twinks would say june gloom and dade county dreaming are hyperpop,” a person commented on X.
“It's okey babe, you still the queen of hyperpop, remember when camila camila invented brat,” a netizen remarked.
“She's completely right. Ppl hate on Taylor 'cause supposedly "all her music sounds the same" or "she doesn't want to step out of the comfort zone" then they hate on girlies that want to try to do something completely different,” an internet user pointed out.
X users clarified that the album sounded nothing like Brat and backlashed the critics for not listening to Cabello's album.
“Now lemme tell u this……. C, xoxo is NOTHING like charli xcx and Gags every past album Camilla’s released KNOW THIS,” an online user wrote.
“this why you have to ignore online hate sometimes cus those comparing cxoxo to charli xcx clearly didn’t listen to the album at all,” another person mentioned.
C,XOXO accentuated Camila Cabello’s love for Miami
In the interview, Camila Cabello mentioned that she sought to turn her memories into a vibrant tribute to Miami, the city she considered her true home, through the album.
Inspired by albums like Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti, which is deeply connected to Puerto Rico, she aimed to celebrate Miami’s uniqueness and its influence on her life.
Camila Cabello added that unlike other cities she loves, such as London or New York, Miami felt like the only place that truly embodied all aspects of her past, present, and future. Nevertheless, the album is a bold, cinematic concept blending pop, hip-hop, and global rhythms.
The project reflected her vision of Latinidad as shaped by Miami’s melting pot of cultures. She said,
“I like the power of the girls. There’s some part of me that always wanted to belong to a girl gang. What I wanted to create for C,XOXO was this sense of power.”
Collaborating with L.A. producer Jasper Harris and Spanish artist-producer El Guincho, Camila Cabello prioritized creating something innovative, with contrast as a defining element.
It was Miami’s dynamic cultural fusion and emerging Spanglish dialect that influenced the album’s sound, described by El Guincho as capturing the chaotic energy of driving through Biscayne, with diverse music blaring from every corner.
