We got Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff in Marvel with 2010's Iron Man 2 and lost her to Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Then we got again to see her in Black Widow (2021), and that was it. But many might not know that Emily Blunt was Jon Favreau's first choice as the character.
Recently, while appearing in an interview, Emily Blunt talked about this a bit and shared her opinion on the role. While her husband, John Krasinski, gets to play a Mr. Fantastic variant in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), she hasn't appeared in any of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects.
Emily Blunt knows the Marvel Cinematic Universe has the best girl
The British actress shows she has some fine stealth and action abilities in Edge of Tomorrow (2014), A Quiet Place (2018), and A Quiet Place Part II (2021), and that would fit well with the MCU character. But she was too busy with other projects and is happy that ScarJo played the role. Emily Blunt said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast while discussing this,
"Come on, the best girl got it."
Scarlett Johansson recalled in one interview with Parade in 2021 that she wasn't the first choice for playing the Marvel character. But that is what made this role special for her. She told Parade that,
"The best call you can receive is after you are rejected for something and then you get it. You appreciate it more. I’ve basically made a career out of being second choice."
While it is unknown when exactly her contract ended with Marvel, Black Widow was when we last saw her in the MCU. Though we can call it the end for her, it was the beginning of a lawsuit involving Disney.
She sued the company following the film's limited release and then on the streaming platform Disney+. That reportedly hurt the profit potential of the film at the box office, out of which she was supposed to get a percentage according to the contract.
However, the lawsuit was settled with unknown terms and Scarlett Johansson clarified that she still has good ties with the company. While it is less likely that we will see her return in future movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has opened up the multiverse, so who knows if she will end up giving a cameo as a Black Widow variant or something.
