Director Matt Reeves has shared fresh details about The Batman 2, giving fans an idea of what to expect from the sequel which is due in 2026. He recently told SFX Magazine that the script is almost done and that filming would start next year.

Even though Warner Bros. delayed the release from October 3, 2025, to October 2, 2026, fans can now relax knowing that the movie is going on the floors.

Robert Pattinson will return for the titular role and the HBO series, The Penguin, will also connect to the storyline. During an interview with SFX Magazine, Matt said:

“The plan is to shoot next year, and we’re finishing up the script now,” Colin [Farrell] will be part of the movie. We’ve shared [the script] as we’ve been going along with DC and the studio and they’re super excited.”

What will The Batman 2 dig into?

Matt Reeves dropped some hints about the upcoming movie's story in the aforementioned interview. According to him, the film will dive deeper into the epic tale of Gotham City, exposing its corruption more profoundly. He also hinted that the movie will take some unexpected turns:

“It’s going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places he couldn’t anticipate in the first one. The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie, and it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see.”

Batman is fighting to keep Gotham City safe from evil. But no matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to get rid of the bad guys completely. The Batman 2 will explore these issues in depth.

Reeves rules out the possibility of featuring Gentleman Ghost in The Batman 2

Reeves will give Batman a fresh spin, leaving out the sci-fi and supernatural elements. In the same interview, he confirmed that The Penguin will be back, but ruled out Gentleman Ghost as a possible villain.

“It doesn’t mean that you won’t see characters that people love. That’s exactly what we want to do. Gentleman Ghost is probably pushed a bit too far for us to be able to find a way to do,”

The first film hinted at the Joker and left the Riddler alive in Arkham, so we might see one or both of them again. Last month, James Gunn from DC Studios shut down a rumor about the sequel's villains and the possibility of introducing Dick Grayson/Robin.

Batman earned $772 million worldwide and the aim will be to top that in 2026.
