The Angry Birds franchise is all set to get its third installment, as Paramount Pictures has just released the deets on the newest addition to the video game series. The threequel will be produced by game creator Rovio Entertainment and owner Sega, and will bring back the titular characters to the screen again, with a newer plot and premise as we explore more of Bird Island.

Alex Pelletier-Normand, CEO of Rovio Entertainment, the brand behind the billion-dollar game, spoke about the project and said:

“The Angry Birds brand has demonstrated remarkable versatility, evolving from a global mobile gaming phenomenon to licensed products, animation, and a thriving cinematic franchise. It has been a deeply collaborative effort to create a film that will resonate with the millions who interact with our catalog of games and products every day. We are confident that with this talented team at the helm, The Angry Birds Movie 3 will delight longtime fans and create new fans in those discovering our flock for the first time.”

Starring Jason Sudeikis as the protagonist Red, the films follow his life on an island full of flightless birds, where he is treated like an outcast because of his anger issues. The plot of the film series and the game revolves around the birds revolting against a species of mysterious green pigs who set out to manipulate the birds and steal their eggs.

The franchise has two films so far, the first one released in 2016 and the second in 2019. The third film will most likely explore more of Red and his adventures at Bird Island, as the complicated relationship between the birds and the pigs continues.

Who’s taking over The Angry Birds 3?

Sony Pictures Entertainment was behind the initial two films, but now Paramount Pictures has taken over as the production house and distribution team behind the franchise's third film.

Producer John Cohen celebrated this new alliance and said:

“We’re very excited to be partnering with Paramount Pictures and extremely proud of our incredible cast. Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Rachel and Danny returning to voice their fantastic characters, but they’re surrounded by an all-star ensemble of comedic talent. These are some of the funniest people out there today, and we’re so thrilled to have them all on board.”
