It has been almost three years since the infamous Oscars slapping incident happened between Chris Rock and Will Smith. The Independence Day star approached the stand-up comic on stage while he was in the middle of his set and slapped him.
Following the slapgate, many gave polarizing reactions, siding with the actor or the comedian. It seems like the controversy has yet to die down, as Chris’ brother, Tony Rock, also has something to say to Smith. During a recent show, a few days before the 97th Academy Awards, Tony addressed the slapping incident:
“I can't leave until I do this last thing on my list of things to do. I have to get Will Smith. [Applause from the crowd]”
He continued:
“Oh yeah. Y'all thought that sh*t f*cking over. That sh*t ain't f*cking over. I'm just laying low right now. That sh*t ain't f*cking over. The Oscars [are] right around the corner. We ain't forget. M* f*cking hit my brother. Don't nobody hit my brother but me. Oh, nobody hit my brother but me… And even I got to clear that shit with Mommy first. M* hit, my brother. Oh, hell, no.”
The slapgate happened in April 2022 during the 94th Oscars. Rock made a “G.I. Jane” joke towards Will’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, without being aware of her struggles with alopecia. The Men in Black actor, who later won the Best Actor award at the ceremony, walked towards the comedian and slapped him across the face.
After returning to his seat, Will Smith shouted twice at Rock:
“Keep my wife’s name out [of] your f*cking mouth!”
Rock was shocked and initially tried to make his point but then continued with the ceremony.
Tony jokingly called out his brother Chris Rock for standing like a “lawn jockey” while facing Will Smith

While displaying his anger towards the I Am Legend star, Rock also recounted his first meeting with his brother after the incident.
“I saw him two days after that shit happened. Walk right in my house. First order of business. ‘Are you okay? ‘Yeah, man, I got slapped.’ ‘Yeah, you did… Yeah.’ I said second. ‘N****... You have not been out of the hood that long that you forgot how to slide on a M*.’ Every black man here. Somebody coming towards you. You don't want to conflict. You slide.”
Tony further made a joking remark proclaiming how Chris Rock faced Will Smith while standing like a statue:
“He didn't slide. He stood there like a f*cking lawn jockey. I was like Mickey from the Rocky movie. I was like, ‘Get out of there Rock. Get out of there Rock. He'll knock your head off Rock. Get out of there.’
The stand-up comic also told his audience he wasn’t present at the venue. He further claimed:
“If I was there, the Oscars would have to go to a commercial and never came back. You want to change the channel? I have been fighting on that channel too. ‘How is this n**** fight on CBS, NBC, Fox, ABC, WB.’”
Chris Rock also addressed the slapping incident in his 2023 Netflix special, Selective Outrage. The comedian referred to Will Smith as “Suge Smith” and declared that he was never going to play “victim” after taking the hit like “Pacquiao” (a former boxer).
He acknowledged that the Ali actor was significantly bigger than him in size but also accused him of practicing “selective outrage.” Rock lambasted Will and Jada Smith while making jokes about the slapgate.
Although the Grown Ups actor showcased his anger towards the Oscar winner, he refused to file a complaint against him. Smith, who had to resign from the Academy and faced a 10-year ban, apologized to Rock following the public outrage.
