Fat Joe slammed Puerto Ricans who are voting for Donald Trump after Trump supporter Tony Hinchcliffe, in a recent New York rally on October 27, 2024, called the Latin American country "a floating island of garbage."
In part one of Us: A Summit on Black & Brown Men & The Vote, which was published on November 1, 2024, Fat Joe expressed disapproval for Puerto Ricans who are voting for Trump, saying:
"How the hell are they gonna call Puerto Rico an island of garbage when I post on my Instagram, 'These the guys you voting for?" I see Puerto Ricans saying, 'No we're still for Trump 2024.' That's that house n**ga mentality. That's the Latino that wish he was white. Those the guys in the comments, you know?"
He went on to add:
"(They) change the voice up (and) try to sound white, trying to fit in. Those the guys I've been fighting my whole life because they look at me like, you know, what I am."
Tony Hinchcliffe's recent controversial speech and comments at the NYC rally raised people's eyebrows, with many pointing out Trump's hesitance to help the country during the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Fat Joe and other Puerto Rican celebrities slam Donald Trump
Fat Joe isn't the first Puerto Rican celebrity to slam Donald Trump for his supporters' recent comments on the country. After Tony Hinchcliffe's rally video went viral, Kamala Harris took to her social media platform, reminding voters of Trump's stance on Puerto Rico. Harris's video was shared by other Puerto Rican celebrities like Bad Bunny, Ricky Martin, and Jennifer Lopez.
Jennifer Lopez, during Kamala Harris' Thursday rally in Las Vegas, addressing Tony Hinchcliffe's comments, said:
"At Madison Square Garden, he reminded us who he really is and how he really feels. It wasn't just Puerto Ricans that were offended that day, OK? It was every Latino in this country, it was humanity and anyone of decent character."
Lopez ended her speech by saying that she is a "lover" and "doesn't want to bring anyone down."
While Hinchcliffe took to X claiming that his speech was meant to be taken as a "joke," Lin Manuel-Miranda disagreed and, in an Instagram post on Monday, said that the rally was a "reminder of how bad it was under Trump, how he treated our people in our moment of need." He then noted that he would vote for Kamala Harris and urged others to vote for the Vice President.
