Quentin Tarantino recently expressed his feelings about the current situation in the film industry these days. The Reservoir Dogs director is known for his successful slate of films that are considered highly influential by the cinephiles.

Quentin Tarantino has been vocal about his thoughts on superhero movies and the film industry in general. Recently, the Pulp Fiction helmer spoke about his views on the contemporary times of the movie industry, labeling it as challenging. He is famously working on his tenth film and has stated that it will be his final film as a director, however, he is in no rush to direct the film as he is focusing on parenthood.

As reported by Variety, Quentin Tarantino attended the Sundance Film Festival where he spoke about the state of the film industry. He shared his concerns over films only playing in theaters for three to four weeks before being available on streaming platforms. He said,

“That’s a big f*cking deal pulling [a play] off, and I don’t know if I can. So here we go. That’s a challenge, a genuine challenge, but making movies? Well, what the f*ck is a movie now? What — something that plays in theaters for a token release for four f*cking weeks? All right, and by the second week you can watch it on television. I didn’t get into all this for diminishing returns."

the streaming reform has fundamentally changed the way the audience consumes any form of entertainment content and it has only been amplified following the COVID-19 pandemic-induced lockdown. This shift in consumer patterns wasn't temporary and created lasting habits that a significant number of viewers now prefer to watch movies from the comfort of their homes.

The Kill Bill director further added that he believes that 2019 was the last year for the movies. That was also the year when his film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood was released. He goes on to say,

I mean, it was bad enough in ’97. It was bad enough in 2019, and that was the last f*cking year of movies. That was a sh*t deal, as far as I was concerned, the fact that it’s gotten drastically worse? And that it’s just, it’s a show pony exercise. Now the theatrical release, you know, and then, like, yeah, in two weeks, you can watch it on this and that one. Okay. Theater? You can’t do that. It’s the final frontier.”

During the peak era of cinema, theatrical runs for movies were much longer and spanned over months with a steady inflow of viewers. This longer running duration also allowed the movies to find their viewership accordingly. Today's theatrical performances are much more focused on creating "viral moments" which would draw a large audience on the opening weekend before the movie is moved to streaming platforms.

Earlier, Tarantino spoke about the importance of watching films in the theatres.

He said,

“There’s no f**king taping it, there’s no cell phone, you own the audience for that time. They are all yours, they are in the palm of your hand. It’s not just about doing art, it’s about wowing them, it’s about giving them a great night out. This to me is f**king existing. It’s the last frontier.”

The theater culture has seen a noticeable decline in the past years and while a few blockbuster films might draw large crowds to the theater every year, the regular movie-going has become less common.

Quentin Tarantino has announced his 10th film which is reportedly titled The Movie Critic. However, the director has stated that he is not in a hurry to take it to production, so fans might have to wait for a bit longer.
