“Still working”: Top Gun 3 actor breaks silence on why the film is taking so long to make

Fans have been waiting for Top Gun 3 as the second installment, Top Gun: Maverick, turned out to be a major success. Despite the anticipation, there is no official news about a third Top Gun film being made.

Recently, one of the stars of Maverick has spilled some news regarding the update for a third installment. It is worth noting that Top Gun 3 was announced in January 2024. But since then, no official news has come forward about the same. Top Gun: Maverick was released on May 27, 2022, and it ended up grossing over $1 billion at the box office.

Top Gun: Maverick star talks about Top Gun 3

Jay Ellis, who starred in Top Gun: Maverick as Lieutenant Reuben Fitch aka Payback, gave an interview to US Weekly in which he provided an update. He spoke about why the film is taking long to get on the floor. He said that the team is working on the story:

"So here’s what the story's going to be. It’s going to be Payback. No, no [I'm kidding]. In all honesty, they're still working on the script. They're still working on the story. They're wanting to get it right."

He then spoke about the film's leading man, Tom Cruise, and called him a stickler.

"You know, Tom is a stickler, and that really comes from him wanting to make sure the audience gets what they paid for and that they're entertained. [So] that for those two hours, they can fully disappear in this theater, and the world around them doesn't exist anymore, and [be] fully entertained. That's where the focus is."

Ellis concluded his point by touching on what the plot of Top Gun 3 could be. He said:

"[It’s also about] really making sure that this story is not done just to make a movie, but made because these characters are going to make people lean in."

Tom Cruise might only get into this film after he is done with Mission Impossible 8 and a film with Alejandro González Iñárritu. We can expect the film to move ahead once the cast members and the director are free from their current commitments. In 2018, it was reported that Charles Parnell would be a part of the cast.

Top Gun: Maverick serves as a sequel to Top Gun, which came out in 1986. The Tom Cruise starrer action drama film was directed by Joseph Kosinski. It ended up becoming the most financially profitable film of Cruise's career.
