Shang-Chi 2 might be delayed but it is still on the horizon for Marvel, according to star Simu Liu's recent comments.
Liu entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. This 2021 film introduced him as a mighty kung-fu master who gets pulled into his gifted father's terrorist organization. The film proved a major success for Liu, launching him into Marvel's big league. It also marked director Destin Daniel Cretton's Marvel debut, previously known for his collaborations with Brie Larson like Short Term 12 and The Glass Castle.
Now, Cretton is supposed to direct Spider-Man 4, as a part of MCU's Phase Six. So, the Shang-Chi fans must be wondering how it impacts the plans for Shang-Chi 2.
"I don't think anything's been impacted...I speak to Destin often and there's nothing coming out of both of us but excitement to make this film."
Liu told Screerant during his interview related to his latest feature film - Alex Parkinson's Last Breath. His quote does not provide any concrete details related to the filming plans for Shang-Chi 2 or its release window. However, it offers hope to the fans who are waiting for Shang-Chi's return to Marvel's canon.
Simu Liu's comment on Shang-Chi 2 and its implications, explored

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is going to direct Spider-Man 4. The Tom Holland-led sequel has a July 2026 release date in plans and it is supposed to go on floors in plans, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, the Shang-Chi sequel has not received a release window yet.
Simu Liu's recent comment during his Screenrant interview seems promising to the 2021 film's fans. It reveals Liu's excitement for another Destin Daniel Cretton collaboration in the form of this Marvel film. So, Cretton's commitment to Spider-Man 4 will likely not affect the plans for the Shang-Chi sequel. Still, Liu's response states nothing substantial about the Shang-Chi 2.
The reason for the delay in announcement related to a Shang-Chi sequel might have to do with the studio's preferences. The Tom Holland-led Spider-Man films earned Marvel and Sony Pictures nearly $4 billion, per Deadline. On the other hand, Simu Liu-led actioner made $432.2M globally.
While Shang-Chi was one of the highest-grossing 2021 films, Spider-Man appears as a more lucrative opportunity for Marvel hoping for a commercial and critical revival. That is potentially why the plan for Shang-Chi 2 is still under wraps.
