Netflix and director Greta Gerwig have high-reaching plans for their Narnia adaptation, according to the latest report from Deadline. It says that the director is hoping to bring Daniel Craig to the cast.
The sources told Deadline that the 007 star has been offered a part in the upcoming film. However, they do not reveal any specific details about the role he is expected to play. There is also no confirmation that he is coming on board for this project as of yet.
This update comes shortly after singer-songwriter Charli XCX was said to be in discussion to play Jadis, the white witch, previously played by Oscar-winning Tilda Swinton. It seems like a step in the right direction since it comes only a year after the triumphant commercial run of the pop star's music album titled Brat.
More details on Netflix's Narnia, helmed by Greta Gerwig
Netflix is bringing a new cast together for their Narnia adaptation, nearly two years after Greta Gerwig reportedly joined the project as the director. It was around the same time when her widely successful Barbie was released in theaters. At the time, while speaking about handling big-scale projects, Gerwig told Games Radar,
“I haven’t even really started wrapping my arms around it. But I’m properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start. I think when I’m scared, it’s always a good sign. Maybe when I stop being scared, it’ll be like, ‘OK. Maybe I shouldn’t do that one.’ No, I’m terrified of it. It’s extraordinary. And so we’ll see, I don’t know.”
Now, the new reports reveal that Daniel Craig and Charli XCX are being considered to be a part of the film's cast. It is supposed to be the first from a series of projects planned by Netflix after their 2018 announcement about adapting C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia series of novels.
The Greta Gerwig-helmed film is eyeing a Thanksgiving Day release in 2026. Netflix has plans to release it on IMAX screens globally for two weeks along with its streaming release. IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond recently shared his thoughts about these plans.
“This [Greta Gerwig's Narnia] was a really great movie [for us] because I think there are like eight movies planned … and what Imax does best is launch franchises and launch events, [and] this is the kind of movie that is very conducive to an Imax release."
The IMAX release and the casting choices reveal the streamer and the Lady Bird director's ambitious plans for this project.
