Sony Pictures Entertainment has recently revealed glimpses from David F. Sandberg's upcoming horror adaptation Until Dawn. The film is based on Supermassive's 2015 video game going by the same name.
Until Dawn shares the same universe as that of the original creation, it will further expand on its "mythos," per Sony. In the latest clip released by the distribution media, Until Dawn producer/screenwriter Gary Dauberman has elaborated on how the movie works. According to helmer David F. Sandberg, the film follows the same "tone" and "vibe" as the 2015 game.
It revolves around a group of teenagers who try to escape a sinister force lurking in and around Blackwood Mountain within the span of a night. The kids try to escape the mysterious killer, and every time someone dies, the loop resets. Similarly, in the movie Until Dawn, players get a chance to make decisions that will direct them towards their fate.
Sony Pictures reveals first look of Until Dawn
Until Dawn stars Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, and Ji-young Yoo in some of the lead roles in a high-stakes horror thriller. According to director Sandberg,
"People make different choices and die in different ways. The movie has this mechanic, where things start over and they get to try again. Every time they come back to life, it's like they're in a new horror genre. To survive, they have to make it Until Dawn!"
So, it is evident that the 2025 adaptation will be closely aligned with the original game. The core element of Until Dawn is a 'time-loop', as described by Sandberg in his statement.
It is highly likely that a character has to survive Until Dawn to escape the vicious cycle of being reset after death. The plot can be multi-layered, but themes of horror, thrill, and suspense remain at the core of the story.
Producer Gary Dauberman has reportedly mentioned in a statement:
"As a huge fan of the Until Dawn game and how cinematic it was, I thought a lot about how we can continue the story without just giving the audience the same experience that they got when they were playing."
Peter Stormere (Doctor Hill) from the original Until Dawn game cast has expressed his views on the upcoming horror adaptation, saying:
"I'm very proud to be part of this evolution onto a screen."
