Months after release, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 keeps breaking viewership records

Jeff Fowler's Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is touching new heights even months after its release, as the film is now one of the highest-grossing sequels ever made. The third installment of the action-animation movie is the most successful one and has collected $225 million domestically and $220 million internationally. It also is one of the top hundred fastest films to reach this box office feat. It was one of the biggest films of 2024 while also becoming the second-most successful film based on a video game, the first being Chris Pratt's The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The movie, voiced by Ben Schwartz, was released on December 20, 2024. However, Paramount recently released the film digitally, which has slowed down its performance in theaters. Nevertheless, it has already reached new heights and is currently one of the top films to rent on Prime Video.

What is Sonic The Hedgehog 3 About?

The third film introduced the antagonist Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves, who is up against Sonic. In the original plot of the video game, he later changes sides and becomes Sonic's friend. The film revolves around Shadow wanting to avenge the G.U.N. for killing his best friend, Maria. As he poses a significant threat to the organization, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles set out to foil his plans and save the headquarters.

The surprising and one of the best parts of the film was Reeves' involvement. He has previously shared excitement over the project and how close it is to his heart. In a statement, the actor said,

“Playing Shadow in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ has been very special for me. I read the script as his internal struggle and I felt sorry for him. He has lost the one person he really cared about and spent 50 years in suspended animation”.

He further added,

“He is understandably angry at the people who took Maria from him and he blames G.U.N. He wants revenge and he knows how to get it. But ultimately his heart is still the same. I tried to find the beautiful spirit that Shadow is”.

After the film's success, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will also get another sequel, as Paramount has confirmed. The upcoming project is slated to release in 2027. Further details are being kept under wraps.
