OpenAI's ChatGPT has been hit with its second downfall this month alone, and users are displeased. Just this Thursday, over 50,000 outages were reported on the platform, Downdetector.com has reported, at around 1:30 p.m. EST. It went on till the evening, with close to 3,500 additional reports clocking in.

As reported by Forbes, any query made to the bot rendered no answers, save for a message reading “Internal Server Error." The internet did what it does, and took to X to complain about it. Users have been poking fun at the situation, with some joking that some students somewhere are now struggling. Here's how one user reacted:

"Damnn someone is failing in exam somewhere in the world because Chatgpt is Down."

The jests didn't end there, though, as is expected of the internet:

"college students and work from home workers are in shambles right now," someone joked.
"250 word essay due by midnight, I have no idea what to right and ChatGPT is down? Yeah it’s over," another echoed.
"Oh No… This is a catastrophe. What ever are we going to do with our lives…," someone questioned, albeit sarcastically.
"Everyone asking ChatGPT to write their New years goals," one user jokingly posited.

Even more weighed in:

"Let’s see how smart some of your really are now," one user challenged.
"Imma ask ChatGPT to tell me about ChatGPT being down," another user quipped.
"the way y’all announcing this right after i was struggling to ask it a question for 10 minutes," someone shared.
"Promised my wife I’d come up with a short paragraph for our wedding invitations and now ChatGPT is down? Yeah, I’m done," another declared.

The platform was riddled with funny personal anecdotes, such as when one user noted that "it's winter break, we'll be fine," and another questioned how they could now "write my trauma dump dissertation."

OpenAI's ChatGPT falters for the second time in one month. Here's all we know

Thursday's outage comes on the heels of one from just two weeks ago when ChatGPT was down for about six hours. OpenAI acknowledged the outage on their official status page, with the message reading:

"We are currently experiencing an issue with high error rates on ChatGPT, the API, and Sora. We are currently investigating and will post an update as soon as we are able”.

Reportedly, the glitch can be attributed to "complications with an unnamed upstream provider, a company that connects local internet service providers to the internet," Cyber Security News has reported. As for the previous outage, the outlet reports that it was due to a telemetry service that didn't work as planned. At the time, ChatGPT, Sora, and API were all impacted.

Notably, as reported by Financial Express, the incident fell on the same day that Apple launched its Siri x ChatGPT collaboration within iOS 18.2, which meant that users were unable to use the chatbot at the time.

At the time of writing, the official status page for Open AI indicates that all systems are operational, namely, API, ChatGPT, Sora, Playground, and Labs.
