Tory Lanez, who was found guilty of shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion, has been serving his 10-year sentence at the California Correctional Institution. However, according to Hot New Hip Hop, an appellate court in LA accepted his habeas corpus writ.
Lanez, who appealed to the court to declare his innocence, may now stand a chance at having his case reinvestigated. DJ Akademiks obtained court documents that indicate the appeal has been accepted. The information has been doing the rounds online, prompting many to weigh in with their inquiries and opinions. One user probed,
"So he’s being released?"
Scores online seemingly had a lot to say:
"Would Megan serve jail term for whatsoever she did then? Wow. It’s about to get interesting," another person stated.
"Arrest Megan thee stallion if she lied. Give her that full sentence Tory got," someone else opined.
"Wow, that’s a major turn of events! If Tory Lanez is found innocent, it could really shake up everything surrounding his case. It'll be interesting to see how this reinvestigation unfolds!" yet another shared.
"I’ve been saying FREE TORY from day one!!!" one user declared.
Others thought that Megan should be convicted to the same sentence should Tory be found innocent.
"When are you arresting Megan for lying?" someone questioned.
"Looks like a certain stallion has some explaining to do," another tweeted, wittily.
"Whaat i had a dream about it some days ago thay he is innocent and now its about to happen yo like fr ?" someone else shared.
On X, #freetory seemed to be making a comeback, as many began picking sides between the two.
Tory Lanez maintains his innocence and tried to get his driver to prove his innocence
Given that the appellate court has accepted Lanez's plea, the District Attorney now has two weeks to respond. If the opportunity arises, investigators can do a double take on Lanez's conviction and whether his trial was executed on unfair grounds.
The Canadian rapper stands guilty of first-degree assault with a firearm, as well as discharge of a firearm with gross negligence. According to Hot New Hip Hop, Tory Lanez remains ineligible for parole until September 2029.
Just this July, the rapper tried to submit new evidence in his defense, but his efforts proved futile. Lanez attempted to get the court to accept his driver, Jauquan Smith's statement. Smith was present on the night of the shooting, and he claimed to have seen Megan Thee Stallion's former friend, Kelsey Harris, holding a gun.
However, on July 29, the California Attorney General’s Office rejected the motion, as Michael C. Keller, the Deputy Attorney General, claimed that the testimony would not have changed the trial's outcome. He said, according to Hot New Hip Hop,
"Defense counsel conceded that Smith would not have been a helpful witness. Because of his bias and the cumulative nature of his proffered testimony."
Tory Lanez has consistently maintained his innocence. Just before he was slated to go to prison, he declared that he would never apologize to Megan Thee Stallion.
