Disney's Snow White live-action adaptation faced immense criticism from the public - thanks to a number of reasons that led the film to have lower-than-expected results at the box office while an entire generation of people who grew up loving Snow White grew upset at the film's disloyal representation of the beloved princess.
All of this came together to make a big wreck for the studio, that spent more than $200 million on this project but then received a dismal reaction at the box office. Sources reveal that this has added to the tension between Zegler and Disney, whose relationship was already strained after the studio failed to invite her to the 2022 Oscars.
In 2022, Disney's West Side Story was a big contender at the Oscars, having been nominated for best picture, director, sound, costume design, production design, cinematography and supporting actress. The cast for the film had an arrival at the show but surprisingly, Rachel Zegler didn't get a ticket to the ceremony, despite having been a part of the film. The actress went on to Instagram and wrote,
“Idk y’all, I have tried it all, but it doesn’t seem to be happening. I will root for ‘West Side Story’ from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did three years ago. I hope some last minute miracle occurs and I can celebrate our film in person, but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, I guess. Thanks for all the shock and outrage — I’m disappointed too. But that’s okay. So proud of our movie.”
This led to Zegler being a part of the ceremony as just a presenter as many questioned why she wasn't a part of the cast that got invited for the film. Fans went on to protest against Disney and Oscars, urging the studio and the organization to get Zegler a ticket for the film. Notably, the actress had even received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the film, making her absence at the ceremony all the more surprising.
Zegler was still working on Snow White during this time, and the tensions between the studio and the actress exacerbated with her comments on the upcoming adaptation of Snow White.
More tensions between Disney and Rachel Zegler

Insiders have also revealed that the studio has had a strained relationship with Zegler following her comments about the movie that led to most of the criticism it faced. Additionally, Zegler's pro Palestinian statements also created tension between her and her co-star Gal Gadot, who has been very verbal about her support for Israel among the conflict. According to Variety, one insider writes,
“She didn’t understand the repercussions of her actions as far as what that meant for the film, for Gal, for anyone."
More criticism followed as Zegler issued an anti-Trump comment following the President's win at the 2024 elections, angering more Americans as they boycotted the film. Taking to Instagram, the actress wrote,
“May Trump supporters … and Trump himself never know peace.”
Regardless, the film has been a representation of a perfect recipe for disaster, the results of which can be clearly seen in its box office numbers.
