Snow White was one of the most anticipated films of 2025. The musical fantasy drama was released on March 21, 2025, and received a mixed critical response. It holds a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The official synopsis of the film reads,
A princess joins forces with seven dwarfs and a group of rebels to liberate her kingdom from her cruel stepmother the Evil Queen.
The Marc Webb directed live-action adaptation of the Disney classic has had a bumpy ride at the box office. It has finally managed to achieve a milestone on the ticket window, having crossed $200 million in revenue. This is a significant threshold that the movie has crossed, however, it is yet to recover its reported budget, which is somewhere between $240 and 270 million.
Snow White achieves box office milestone
Disney's Snow White has been facing multiple controversies, coupled with the mixed to negative critical response it received, might have hampered its box office performance. It opened to $42.2 million in the domestic market and has finally managed to achieve a milestone.
As per Box Office Mojo, the musical fantasy film has grossed more than $200 million at the global box office weeks after its release. Out of this figure, $114.4 million is from the global market while $85.7 million is from the domestic ticket windows. Despite this achievement, the Rachel Zegler starrer has not recovered its budget of around $240-270 million.
The film is written by Erin Cressida Wilson while Marc Platt and Jared LeBoff are its producers. The film is a modern-day live-action adaptation of Disney's animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which was released in 1937 (which itself was inspired by a namesake fairytale). Since the beginning, the film has been marred by controversies.
Rachel Zegler's casting as the titular protagonist was not received well because of her skin color, as many believed the source material described the character having skin as white as snow. In response, the actress said that the film has a different origin story. She said,
“It fell back to another version of ‘Snow White’ that was told in history, where she survived a snowstorm that occurred when she was a baby and so the king and queen decided to name her Snow White to remind her of her resilience. One of the core points in our film for any young woman or young person is remembering how strong you actually are.”
Besides that, the film's depiction of the Dwarves and Zegler's political comments also attracted attention.
