Snow White was released on March 21, 2025, and received mostly mixed reviews from critics. It holds a 42% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a low score on IMDb as well.
The official synopsis of the film reads,
A princess joins forces with seven dwarfs to liberate her kingdom from her cruel stepmother the Evil Queen.
Furthermore, the film has also managed to underperform at the box office. Projections indicate a slump of 53% or more at the ticket window in the second weekend amid the controversies surrounding the film. So, let us take a look at the details.
Snow White to see a 53% dip at the box-office
Deadline has reported that Snow White will continue to struggle at the box office. The musical fantasy film is expected to experience a drop of 53% or even more in its second weekend, resulting in nearly $20 million. The film was produced on a budget of approximately $270 million, not counting its marketing costs.
Snow White opened to $42.2 million, which fell short of projections by various outlets. Since the announcement, the film has been plagued by several controversies.
One controversy began with the casting of Rachel Zegler, as the protagonist, according to the source material, has skin as white as snow. The actress defended Disney's casting choices.
Another moment of controversy was when Zegler criticized the original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs that came out in 1937. She said:
"The original cartoon came out in 1937 and very evidently so. There's a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird! Weird. So we didn't do that this time. We have a different approach to what I'm sure a lot of people will assume is a love story just because we cast a guy in the movie, Andrew Burnap, great dude."
British actor Peter Dinklage also criticized the film for its portrayal of dwarves. Disney stated that they are in touch with members of the dwarfism community to avoid stereotyping any character.
During the 2024 US Presidential elections, Zegler tweeted to call out Donald Trump and his supporters. Previously, she had also called for the liberation of Palestine. A Variety report mentioned that the film's producer, Marc Platt, flew to New York to persuade her to retract her tweet. The studio also provided her with a social media expert.
