Emilia Perez is a Spanish film from France that has garnered acclaim, and has received 13 nominations at the Oscars 2025 besides glowing reviews. The film, however, has drawn criticism, too.

Jacques Audiard, who has written and directed the musical crime drama, has finally addressed the criticism that Emilia Perez has courted, over the way Mexico has been shown in the film. He said that the intended message of his film is different from the reactions he has been getting.

Emilia Perez director speaks on the film's criticism

Jacques Audiard, director of the Academy Award-nominated film Emilia Perez, recently gave an interview with Deadline where, among other things, he spoke about the criticism his film has received regarding its depiction of Mexico. He said that such reactions contradict the message of Emilia Perez. Audiard said in the interview:

"Spanish is such a rich language that crosses borders. What's been said about my statement is actually exactly the opposite of what I think. I worked five years on this film and for it to now be denigrated in this way, it's really simply too much."

He believes that those who are criticizing his film have not seen it completely and claims that they are acting out in bad faith.

The director also spoke about certain tweets of actress Karla Sofia Gascon that have resurfaced lately, for which she has received backlash on the internet. He said that the tweets she made were "worthy" of being hated, and it has affected their relationship. He said:

"It's very hard for me to think back to the work I did with Karla Sofía. The trust we shared, the exceptional atmosphere that we had on the set that was indeed based on trust."

He said her tweets were inexcusable:

"And when you have that kind of relationship and suddenly you read something that that person has said, things that are absolutely hateful and worthy of being hated, of course that relationship is affected. It's as if you fall into a hole. Because what Karla Sofía said is inexcusable."

In the interview, the director noted that he has not spoken to Gascon ever since her tweets have resurfaced. He said:

"I haven’t spoken to her, and I don’t want to. She is in a self-destructive approach that I can’t interfere in, and I really don’t understand why she’s continuing. Why is she harming herself? Why? I don’t understand it, and what I don’t understand about this too is why she’s harming people who were very close to her."

Audiard added that she needs time to reflect on what she has done and he won't be getting in touch with her soon.

Emilia Perez had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and has received 13 Oscar nominations this year including Best Picture and Best Actress for Gascon, who has become the first trans woman to receive the nomination in Oscar history.
