Universal Pictures is putting Minions 3 and Shrek 5 in the same year's release window opening next year, with the former coming out on December 23, 2026, and the latter sometime around summer, according to Deadline. Both come from among Universal's highest-grossing franchises to this date, bringing a collective sum of over $18 billion to date.
Moreover, another movie from Illumination has taken the Minions 3 spot, releasing on June 30, 2027, but the project remains undisclosed. An untitled Jordan Peele film will be released in October 2026, clashing with William Steig's story adaptation.
Shrek 5 is likely to be the last film in the franchise
After getting much love from the fans as they enjoyed Shrek 2 in 2004, Jefferey Katzenberg, who served as DreamWorks Animation CEO, said the story is outlined in five films. Now details of the plot are thin on the ground but it is likely to explore the origins of the green protagonist in the swamp.
Regarding the film's cast, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are likely to reprise their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Princess Fiona. Apart from the first two films in the franchise, Universal has sought different directors for the rest of the movies. The same will be the case with Shrek 5, which Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn are directing.
Unlike Shrek 5, we don't have much detail on Minions 3 but it is likely to be called 'Mega Minions' as per the IMDb listing where Young Gru will be teaming up with Dr. Nefario for his next adventure. Pierre Coffin is returning to the director's chair for this one and Steve Carrell will most probably be playing Gru, given his longtime association with the character.
Though all the films were commercial successes at the box office, only Despicable Me and the first Minions film crossed that $1 billion mark. None of the Shrek movies have achieved this feat, with Shrek 2 being the highest, having collected $935 million at the box office.
It's not just these two films but Universal Pictures is high on some interesting developments. A film adaptation based on Shinobi, who is also among the flagship characters of Sega, is under way. Then we have The Secret Life of Pets 3, which the film's producer Chris Meledandri confirmed in 2022 that it is under way.
As for the confirmed 2025 slate, Universal is set to release 19 films, including Jurassic World Rebirth, How to Train Your Dragon, Wicked: For Good, and more at the time of writing.
