Sydney Sweeney is taking on a foreign role as Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic, the actress revealed on Wednesday, October 16.
While details like the release date and title remain scarce, the actress, renowned for her role in Euphoria, will embody the professional boxer generally credited with validating women's boxing.
In the images she shared on Instagram, Sweeney can be seen sporting a 1990s mullet. However, it was the muscles she put on that did not go unnoticed among fans. The internet was elated at seeing the actress step out of her comfort zone, as many lauded her for her dedication to the role.
However, others online poked fun at the actress. In referring to her on-screen toxic fling, Nate Jacobs from Euphoria, played by Jacob Elordi, one fan jested,
"She training to fight Nate Jacobs."
Others expressed shock at her stunning new appearance:
"Buff Sydney Sweeney was not on my bingo card but I am here for it," one user shared.
"We got jacked Sydney Sweeney before GTA 6," another jokingly pointed out.
"SHE IN HER MUSCLE MOMMY ERA NOW," another fan exclaimed.
"Okay but if a man does this, he is an icon for changing his body for a role. A queen does it and everyone is upset that she didn't check with them first....the audacity is real..." someone pointed out.
"Don't let Jake Paul see this, he gonna want to set up a match," yet another joked.
Several others chimed in to laud the actress for the same:
"she’s been had range y’all just never watched handmaids tale fr," one user asserted.
"love how literally none of the comments are about the movie and instead just about sydney sweeney’s body. nice," someone else jabbed.
"OK I'm here for this, I think she can pull it off!" yet another lauded.
Others commended Sweeney for "breaking free" of the "male gaze," dubbing her actions a "power move."
Sydney Sweeney says she is "honored" to "step into the shoes" of Christy Martin
Sydney Sweeney's caption on Instagram read:
"Well, the cat’s out of the bag thanks to some paps in the bushes, so here’s a little BTS from my film I’m working on right now. over the past few months, i’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman—a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring."
The actress continued:
"her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all. more to come soon :)"
Christy Martin was the first female boxer to ever be inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame (2016) and International Boxing Hall of Fame (2020). Her career spanned from 1989-2012, and she earned the title of world champion in the super welterweight class in 2009.
The following year, she made it out alive when her husband, James Martin, tried to kill her. He stabbed her, repeatedly, and shot her in the torso. The incident reportedly took place in their home in Apopka.
James, then 66 years old, was consequently sentenced to 25 years behind bars after he was found guilty of attempted second-degree murder in 2012.
The film, directed by David Michod, is written by Mirrah Foulkes and Michod. Alongside Sweeney, Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brien, Ethan Embry, Chad L. Coleman, and Tony Cavalero will star in the film.
