American TV personality Benzino, in an upcoming episode of the We in Miami podcast, opens up about how he feels about becoming a grandfather. His response comes after his estranged daughter, Coi Leray, 27, and Trippie Redd, 25, announced last week that they are expecting their first child.
"I'am gonna be a grandfather. I just found out when everybody else found out. It's gonna grow her up. I hope it does, because she'll finally get to know what it is to be a parent. She'll get to see firsthand what I was going through."
When asked if Leray would allow him into his grandchild's life, Benzino explained that their story has been "a little bit awkward to say the least," and noted that "nobody really understood my relationship with my daughter before she was a rap star."
Rapper Coi Leray has publicly thrown shade at her father, Benzino. In her 2021 song, No More Parties, Coi sang,
"My daddy let me down, but I promise you, I won't let up, I wanna say (expletive) that man but the (expletive) won't make me better."
"Believe me, that baby gonna know its grandad" - says Benzino about Coi Leray's pregnancy
While discussing his daughter Coi Leray's pregnancy on the We in Miami podcast. Benzino said that despite their estranged relationship, he wants to get to know his grandchild.
"Believe me, that baby gonna know it's granddad. It's important for me to get my message to that baby regardless of whatever we going through. That ain't got nothing to do with the grandbaby. And like I said, she gonna want him to have that MVP, those morals, those values, and principles, and that's gonna be his granddad. And you know Trippie's pops, and his mom."
Despite Coi's derogatory lyrics about her father in a 2021 song, the two are known to be on better terms during the release of her album Trendsetter. However, their relationship again took a sour direction in 2023 when Leray accused Benzino of being "envious" of her success - which he denied.
Leray took to X at the time, saying,
"I want everybody to know I want nothing to do with anything my father has going on. I haven't spoken to him in over a year and I don't condone or respect any of them interviews he got going on. I don't respect his decisions and I really want nothing to do with him please dont (sic) even think of me when you see him."
She also added that "Sharing the same DNA and blood DOESN'T make us FAMILY."
