Daniel Craig is officially no longer a part of the Sgt. Rock project in the DC Universe (DCU). The actor was initially set to star in the film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, making a reunion collaboration after their A24 film Queer. However, according to the reports, Daniel Craig has exited the role, citing several scheduling conflicts and personal considerations.

The film, centered around the DC Comics character, will still be moving forward, with casting for Craig’s replacement already in progress.

Daniel Craig Steps Away from Sgt. Rock

Reports suggest that Daniel Craig’s decision to leave Sgt. Rock was influenced by a lack of enthusiasm following the underwhelming critical and commercial response to his previous collaboration with Guadagnino on Queer, which allegedly led Craig to re-evaluate his commitment to the DCU project.

Additionally, scheduling conflicts have been cited as a contributing factor. Craig is said to prioritize family commitments, mainly towards his wife, Rachel Weisz, which conflicted with the production time of the film.

Regardless of this stumbling block, the DC project is on track to commence filming this summer, with rumors spinning around that The Bear star Jeremy Allen White is being considered for a role replacing Craig.

The Legacy of Sgt. Rock

The character Sgt. Rock, founded by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, made his first appearance in DC Comics’ Our Army at War #83 in 1959. As a World War II soldier, the character is known for his excellent combat skills and a calm personality while in distress.

In 2022, actor and director Bruce Campbell penned a limited comic book series titled Sgt. Rock vs. the Army of the Dead, gave the character a new image by pitting him against a group of undead enemies.

While no official plot specifics for the film have been shared publicly, fans are interested to see how the comic adaptation will render the character for a new era of fans.

With Daniel Craig stepping away, the future of this project now relies on finding the right actor to take over the character. Jeremy Allen White, recognized for his Emmy-winning performance in The Bear, is one of the potential candidates. However, there has been no official confirmation made as of yet.

Regardless of the casting obstacle, DC Studios appears dedicated to bringing the film to the theatres, with Luca Guadagnino directing the project. As one of DC’s unexplored characters, Sgt. Rock might just bring a unique touch to the DCU and its fans.
