Seven Veils revolves around the story of theatre artist and director, Jeanine (played by Amanda Seyfried), who faces multiple challenges (including her repressed trauma) as she tries to get a breakthrough in the world of opera with her own rendition of the classic Salome. She ventures on a solo mission to bring back the work of her ex-mentor to the operatic universe but her dark past keeps haunting her.
The emotional turmoil rages on inside of her but is not strong enough to break her resolve. As the plot unravels, viewers will witness Jeanine trying to find a balance between her personal issues and the world of theatre as the boundary between reality and illusion draws her to a crossroad.
As per Deadline, there have been multiple adaptations of the story in the past including literary works by Oscar Wilde and Richard Strauss' operatic rendition. Seven Veils is set for a theatrical release in the United States on March 7, 2025, with initial screenings running in Glendale, California.
According to reports, Biblical themes and lores will play a major role in the story of Seven Veils. According to Deadline, Salome's lineage dates back to the Herodian Dynasty - King Herod Antipas (successor of Herod The Great) being her stepfather. Mesmerized by her dance performance, Antipas granted her the wish to have whatever she desired and Salome asked for the John the Baptist's head.
Director Atom Egoyan has reportedly described the theme of Seven Veils tagging it as "not really an opera movie". His exact words were:
"I wanted to explore how the themes of Salome could weave with the story of remounting this particular production. It’s not really an opera movie, it’s just using the world of the opera as a workplace like any workplace. We see the characters as they float in and out of scenes dealing with the preparation of the opera."
Seven Veils will feature an ensemble cast alongside Seyfried, comprising Mark O'Brien, Rebecca Liddiard, and Douglas Smith in some of the lead roles. Rhombus Media and Ego Film Arts are taking care of production along with XYZ Films.
