Recently, singer-actress Selena Gomez opened up about her lupus diagnosis and how it affects her motherhood dream. The singer said in an interview that she won't be able to have kids due to health issues.

“I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy,” she told Vanity Fair.

Selena Gomez added:

“That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

Since 2013, when she was first diagnosed, Gomez has had to fight some brutal health battles, including having a kidney transplant in 2017. So the star of Only Murders in the Building knows that carrying a pregnancy isn't the safest option for her.

However, she is positive and probably considering surrogacy or adoption as an alternative.

“I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different,” Gomez told The Independent.

Lupus and its impact on Selena Gomez’s health

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that has changed Gomez's life since her diagnosis over a decade ago. This condition makes her immune system attack healthy tissues, thus causing serious health problems.

In the year 2017, she had to undergo a kidney transplant, and her friend Francia Raisa was very heroic by stepping up and donating one of hers. In retrospect, Gomez has spoken candidly about how lupus has taken its emotional and physical toll, especially when it comes to having kids.

She is also on medications for bipolar disorder, for which she was diagnosed in 2022, and that might make her journey towards pregnancy even more difficult with regards to her health. She said in the interview that it took her a while to accept that her health issues made it too risky for her and the future baby to get pregnant naturally.

Selena Gomez admitted to Entertainment Weekly:

“It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone”

Selena Gomez’s hopes for motherhood

While that's tough for Gomez, she is still very anxious to be a mom. During the interview with Vanity Fair, she mentioned her hopes for adoption or surrogacy and referred to them as "blessings", because there are women just like her who would want to be parents. Another thing that motivates her to think about adoption for building her family is that her mother was adopted, too.

Selena Gomez expressed her gratitude for the support options available to her, telling The Independent:

“At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”

Gomez has said multiple times that family is "the most important thing" to her, and she'd like to be a mom by 35. She's optimistic about the future and believes that even if her road is a little different, it will be equally rewarding.

She looks up to people who decide to go through surrogacy or adoption, options that she's considering too. While she is shining in her career with her recent Emmy nomination for 'Only Murders in the Building', starting a family is a big part of her plans.
