It has recently been announced that Jon M. Chu will helm a biopic focused on the life of Britney Spears. The acclaimed director, known for Crazy Rich Asians and Wicked, will use Britney’s memoir, The Woman in Me, as the basis of his project, with the embattled pop star serving as a close liaison on set. What really has the fans going are unconfirmed reports that Britney has supported another pop star — Selena Gomzez — to fit the bill and convey her story authentically.
Speaking at the Golden Globes, Chu had shared:
"Britney is deeply involved in this project. This is her story, and we want it to reflect her truth."
He clarified that this isn’t just a celebrity story but a personal journey that deserves to be told with respect.
Gomez's rise to fame
Gomez started out as a child star in the TV series Barney and Friends, and would go on to become a teen icon playing Alex Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place on Disney Channel. She has since dropped three solo studio albums as a singer that debuted at the top in the US Billboard 200.
Even as her career as a pop star was on the rise, Selena Gomez impressed as an actress in the critically acclaimed comedy mystery series, Only Murders in the Building, co-starring comic legends Martin Short and Steve Martin Gomez.
Clearly, there are several parallels between her and Britney’s respective careers, something Gomez can tap into if she lands the role. According to unconfirmed reports doing the rounds of the internet, Britney thinks Selena’s personal journey could add to accurately depicting her story.
While Britney has spoken glowingly of Gomez, who also owns the cosmetics line Rare Beauty, for now all conversations about such casting are based on nothing more than rumours. According to several other unconfirmed reports, Natalie Portman has also been linked to playing Britney but there is has been no official confirmation yet.
Meanwhile, Selena Gomez was in the headlines recently for fake reports of disparaging comments made about her by the President Elect Donald Trump.
