"She changed her mind huh. I wonder how all them folks she locked up feel about that. 😂," another user commented
"A desperate, last-minute, sell off of her values to try and reach younger voters 🤦🏻♂️ more transparent than a window," said nanother user
"I mean... people's worldviews can truly change as they get older, I don't knock her for this. But if this is going to be her stance now, then she needs to go back and release every single person she has ever locked up for this," said another user
More about Kamala Harris's plans to legalize recreational marijuana
Kamala Harris's new promise to legalize marijuana is a part of her campaign's new "Opportunity Economy" which is focused on Black male voters. The agenda also includes handing out 1 million "fully forgivable" loans of up to $20,000 for Black entrepreneurs and "others."
As per a report by Mercury News, Kamala Harris's office secured 1,956 misdemeanor or felony convictions for possession, cultivation, or sale of marijuana during her time as San Francisco's top prosecutor. While 45 people were sent to state prison for marijuana-related offenses, many others were sentenced to serve time in county jails.
During an appearance on The Breakfast Club radio program hosted by Charlamagne, a Black comedian, Kamala Harris was asked to address a rumor that she disproportionately locked up Black men during her years as San Francisco's district attorney.
Harris denied the allegations and said that she was described as "one of the most progressive" prosecutors on marijuana cases. She also noted that as president she would work to decriminalize marijuana.
