Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell revealed that her book, on which the 1998 drama series is based, was inspired by real-life events.

During a recent episode of the Are You a Charlotte podcast, host Kristin Davis, who played the role of Charlotte, asked Candace Bushnell if the episode in which her character gets crabs or public lice was "real," to which Candace agreed, saying, "Yes."

When Kristin asks,

"(The episode) when I pretend Charlotte pretends to be 27 or whatever, and then I get crabs...that was real?"

Kristin was referring to Season 2, episode Twenty-Something Girls vs. Thirty-Something Women, which was released on September 26, 1999. In the story, Charlotte pretends to be 27 and hooks up with a younger man named Greg during a trip to the Hamptons. Soon after, Charlotte discovers that she has pubic lice.

Bushnell, while recalling the incident, said that she once heard of a woman who went to the Hamptons and hooked up with twenty-something-year-old guys.

"Yes. But not the part about Charlotte getting crabs."

The author then went on to note that the storyline was ideated after she combed multiple real-life incidents.

"I mean, look, that's the kind of thing that happens. I had this, whatever, crazy roommate. And she was always having s*x. And she got crabs, and we shared an apartment. And guess what?"

When Davis asked if she got crabs from her roommate, Bushnell said "yes," since "they go on the towel." When Candace Bushnell highlighted that "nobody tells you" about pubic lice, Davis agreed, saying that "it's some important information," and by including it in the storyline of the series, they are educating people.

Candace Bushnell reveals which character from SATC were based on a real person

Elsewhere in the podcast, Candace Bushnell revealed that her book and column about four twenty-something-year-old girls living in NYC were inspired by real-life events. The author would go out "pretty much every single night" with her notebook and take "actual notes," but she has changed the names of the characters.

"I would run to the bathroom and take notes. So, I would be in the bathroom, writing things down, like, 'Somebody said this, somebody said that."

The author also revealed that Charlotte's character was the only character that she "really created" with Darren Star. Samantha's character was inspired by her friend, who "knew everything about men," and Mr. Big's character was inspired by a real person named Ron Galotti, while Miranda's character is also based off of a real person.
