Chappell Roan's thought-provoking calls for the music industry to equip its artists with better access to healthcare have drawn the support of celebrities like Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Noah Kahan, and more.
As reported by Variety, several artists are now coming forward to match Roan's $25K donation towards up-and-coming artists. At the Grammys, upon accepting her award for Best New Artist, Roan called on all labels in the industry to “offer a livable wage and health care, especially developing artists." At the time, she urged her fans to refrain from donating, as she penned on Instagram on February 9:
"Fans, y’all don’t have to donate a damn penny. This is one of many opportunities for the industry powers to show up for artists. There is much more work to be done.”
Everything we know about Chappell Roan's rally for better mental health care:
As reported by NME, following her speech at the Grammys, Chappell Roan teamed up with Backline, an industry non-profit group, to create their collaboration known as ‘We Got You’. Several outlets have now reported that Sabrina Carpenter matched the $25K in support of the cause.
According to the outlet, the cause is a bid to:
“Support accessibility of health care for artists,” and to “create a safer and more supported industry for artists to thrive.”
Backline also confirmed Sabrina Carpenter's donation to Billboard.
The Espresso singer's donation comes alongside stars like Charli XCX and Noah Kahan, both of whom took to Instagram to echo Roan's sentiments:
“I’m inspired by you. Happy to help get the ball rolling. Money where mouth is,” Kahan wrote on his Instagram Stories.
While Charli penned the following:
“I saw @noahkahanmusic say that he would do the same and so I thought I’d follow suit. Your speech at the Grammys was inspiring and thoughtful and from a genuine place of care.”
The We Got You's donations page lists several agencies and celebrities who have donated apart from the aforementioned, including Live Nation, AEG Global Touring, Wasserman Foundation, Guy Oseary, and more.
“In a world where mental health care and wellness often takes a backseat, this initiative aims to raise funds and provide vital resources for artists who need access to mental health care,” We Got You wrote on Instagram, per Variety. “Chappell Roan’s monumental speech at the Grammys last week was a game-changer, as she courageously advocated for better support for artists everywhere. Her words were a powerful reminder of the crucial need for health and well-being for artists in the industry and now, through this initiative, we’re turning advocacy into action.”
However, Chappell Roan's pleas have stirred up controversy, as Jeffrey Rabhan, a music executive and former Chair of NYU’s Clive Davis Institute, took to the guest column of The Hollywood Reporter to brush off her words as "misguided" and "uninformed."
