Ryan Coogler's Sinners marks his fifth collaboration with Michael B. Jordan. It shows the Creed star in a dual role of identical twins. Set in the Jim Crow-era American South, the film shows the twins returning to their homeland to leave their troubles behind. However, this decision puts them in more danger as they face challenges they never deemed possible.

The first trailer of Sinners, which came out on September 24, 2024, offered only a few glimpses into the film's subject matter. However, the recently released second trailer gives more context about its setting and its characters. So, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan decided to break down the trailer for Entertainment Weekly.

The actor revealed what fascinated him about the dual role. Here's what he said:

"Playing twins was definitely a challenge. It was part of the reason why I wanted to take the role. Ryan built two characters that were very much so different but kind of the same as well."

Let's dive into what else they said about the new trailer.

Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan talk about the Sinners trailer: Details explored

Ryan Coogler is back with a new project starring Michael B. Jordan. They began their collaborative journey with Coogler's Fruitvale Station, which won big at the Sundance and Cannes film festivals. Then, they went on to work on commercially successful Creed and both Black Panther films.

Sinners offers them a wider scope to tell a personal narrative through a supernatural horror tale. The actor-director duo recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly (EW) on January 28, 2025, to decode their new trailer.

During this discussion, Coogler mentioned that Sinners takes place over one day. It follows the twins named Stack and Smoke. To ensure people understand who is who, Coogler reportedly chose distinct colors for their attire. Speaking about the same topic, Michael B. Jordan said:

"Stack is going to be in red throughout the movie while Smoke's going to be in Blue. That's the easiest way to tell them apart."

He further added:

"Smoke doesn't smile often. If you smile, you're most likely Stack."

Coogler notes his admiration for Jordan's performance from the moment he walked on the stage. He mentions Jordan's entrance on the first day of their shoot, as Smoke unnerved him. Jordan revealed how his personal life informed his performance. While speaking about his intense role, he said:

"People who know me for real...I think they are going to enjoy it because they will see the side of me that I don't show."

Not just Jordan but Coogler was also inspired by his personal life and familial history. During another interview, he called Sinners his most personal film to date. Speaking on this connection to the film's setting, he revealed:

“It’s a world that my grandparents were a part of...a time that is overlooked in American history.”

He further added:

“I’m blessed to have found this medium that I can work out deep philosophical and existential questions that I may be struggling with while contributing to an art form that means so much to my family. Each film brings me closer to understanding myself and the world around me."

Sinners will debut in the US theaters on April 18, 2025.
