Ryan Coogler decodes why Sinners looks beautiful
In a video, Sinners director Ryan Coogler explains the reason behind the horror film looking visually good. He revealed that it was shot with two different aspect ratios, and the viewers will have different options to choose from when they buy a ticket.
"There's one aspect ratio, the ultrapanavision 2.76 ratio. That's gonna be the most widely available format to see the film the whole time in that ratio without the aspect ratios changing at all."
He then spoke about the IMAX format.
"If you live close to a IMAX theatre and you choose to buy IMAX ticket, you might have a 190 IMAX available to you, which for certain portions of the film, the aspect ratio will expand and if you especially lucky you might live close to a IMAX 143:1 ratio theatre where you'll get the full impact of every image how we intended to see it."
Coogler said that the 2:76 aspect ratio is used in scenes of "emotional intensity, musical intensity, or horror intensity" of the film to make it more immersive.
Sinners is produced by Ryan, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian. The film revolves around twin brothers who return to their hometown in the 1930s, where things go wrong. Coogler has once again worked with his long-time collaborator, Michael B. Jordan, in this film, who plays the twin brothers.
Amid its successful theatrical run, both Jordan and Coogler gave an interview to Gamesradar+ where they were asked for a potential sequel. In response, Jordan said that he is up for it, but it's Coogler who is the decision maker. Coogler, meanwhile, has said that he wanted the film to feel like a full meal. So fans will need to keep their fingers crossed and wait for the sequel.
