Harry Potter star Rupert Grint has a net worth of $50 million as per Celebrity Net Worth. Grint has been hit with a £1.8 million (around $2.3 million) tax bill after he lost a legal battle with HM Revenue and Customs related to his earnings in the 2011 to 2012 tax year.

He was initially ordered to pay the bill in 2019 after HMRC investigated his tax returns from the 2011-2012 tax year. Earlier, the actor had received £4.5 million from a company that managed his business affairs as 'consideration for rights, records and goodwill."

Rupert claimed the money to be a 'capital asset,' which means that it would have a lower tax rate than if it was classed as income. As per the actor, the payment was related to residual income and bonuses from Harry Potter films. However, HMRC argued that the fee should have been classified as income and informed the actor that he needed to pay an additional £1,801,060 as tax after an investigation.

Although the actor appealed the decision at a hearing in the First-Tier Tribunal in London in November and December 2022 and argued that the appropriate amount of tax had been paid, the appeal was dismissed by a tribunal judge.

As per Tribunal Judge Harriet Morgan, the fee "derived substantially the whole of its value from the activities of Mr. Grint," which was "otherwise realised" as income reportedly.

More about Rupert Grint's tax battle

This isn't the first time Rupert Grint has been involved in a tax battle. The actor had lost a £1 million tax refund case in 2016 in a separate court.

In 2016, a tax tribunal judge rejected Grint's appeal against an HMRC block on the actor using a change in accounting dates to protect his earnings from the higher 50% tax rate. As per The Guardian, the actor had made around £24m from the Potter franchise.

As per Judge Barbara Mosedale, if the date change appeal had been accepted, Grint would have saved 10%, which was about £1m according to Grint's accountings. As per tax authorities, Grint had every right to change accounting dates, but he denied that he had done it.

Rupert Grint played the role of Ron Weasley in all eight Harry Potter films from 2001 to 2011. Since the franchise concluded, Grint appeared in numerous roles on stage and screen, including a recurring role on the Apple TV series Servant over the last four years.
