Chelsea O’Donnell has filed to legally change her surname amid reports that her adoptive mother, Rosie O’Donnell, has removed her from her will and two family trusts. According to court documents obtained by the Daily Mail, the 27-year-old submitted the petition in January, stating her intent to use Neuens, the maiden name of her birth mother, Deanna Micoley.

Rosie O’Donnell reportedly revised her will, in the days following up to her departure for Ireland, a move she made in response to the Republican Party member Donald Trump being re-elected as the 47th president of the United States.

Chelsea O’Donnell received a poem from her mom

On Monday, Rosie published a poem titled “My Child Chelsea” on her Substack account. The 30-stanza piece appears to address Chelsea O’Donnell’s petition to legally remove “O’Donnell” from her name. She also clarified in the end that the poem was posted with her daughter's approval.

In the poem, O’Donnell acknowledged her daughter’s desire for privacy, writing,

"she wants her privacy / i am her mom / the story is out there / people judge and ask"

The poem continued,

"why didn't u try more .../ u should have done something else /...I would never have ... /if she were mine ..."

O’Donnell described the complexity of Chelsea’s adoption and upbringing, sharing,

"Well she's not / she has 3 moms actually / me kelli and Deanna / in no particular order"

She continued,

"Every adoption story is complicated / nuance and subtext / a primal wound / sometimes doesn't heal"

Reflecting on Chelsea’s decision to legally change her last name, O’Donnell wrote,

"She wishes to change her last name / to her birth moms maiden name / doesn't make sense to me / I am not her"

She later added,

"Its not about me / I am here for her / she's not here for me / a wise woman once said"

The poem also revisited difficult periods in Chelsea’s life, particularly during her teenage years, referencing public attention and past challenges:

"Her journey / made public by a series of bad decisions / on everyones part / when she was a young teen"

Rosie then addressed why she doesn't speak much about Chelsea, saying,

"Some things are hard to come back from / why don't u talk about her more / how can I / what would I say"
"that she will be ok with me sharing / she doesn't like it / when the press shows up / at some hearing"

Chelsea's arrests related to her drug addiction

Following Chelsea O’Donnell’s third arrest in as many months in November 2024, Rosie O’Donnell addressed the situation publicly via Instagram.

"so yes this is true - after being bailed out by her birth mother - chelsea was arrested again - and is facing many charges related to her drug addiction - we all hope she is able to get the help she needs to turn her life around - #drug-addiction #tragic #sadness #truth"

Rosie has spoken publicly in the past about her relationship with her daughter.

“She has had a tough road,” she told the Mail in 2017.
“Chelsea is mentally ill. Has been in and out of hospitals most of her life. She is very sick. She is not capable of truth or reason.”

In a November 2024 interview with the Daily Mail, Chelsea shared her dispiritedness with Rosie, saying,

“My mother is more interested in getting the Menendez Brothers released from prison than getting me out,”
“When I called Rosie to ask her to bail me out, she told me flat out, ‘You belong in there.’ She said: ‘I really can’t help you get out of there; I don’t want you to kill yourself. I don’t want to be responsible for you killing yourself.’”
