Marvel recently announced the cast members of their forthcoming superhero film Avengers: Doomsday. The 39th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a direct sequel to Avengers: Endgame and the fifth installment in the Avengers series. The film is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2026.
Joe and Anthony Russo, who have helmed several MCU projects in the past, are set to return as directors on Doomsday. The studio announced the film's multi-star cast through a video that ends in style with Robert Downey Jr., who plays the antagonist Dr Doom. Let's look at the details of the video and how RDJ ends it.
Robert Downey Jr. concludes Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement video
On March 27, 2025, Marvel released a one-minute and 47-second video to officially announce the cast members of Avengers: Doomsday. The video, through its title, also confirmed that the film is now in production.
In the video, the camera captures a long row of vacant chairs from behind, with the names of the stars written on the backrest. Starting with Chris Hemsworth, the video swiftly pans to show one chair after the other with names of the primary cast members. This includes Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Pedro Pascal, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Simu Liu among others.
Right at the end of the row, seated in the last chair with his name on it, is Robert Downey Jr. He turns to face the camera, gestures at us to keep quiet, gets up and walks away with a smile.
At the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that Robert Downey Jr. would play Victor Von Doom aka Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. The announcement surprised many fans because the actor had previously essayed Iron Man/Tony Stark in the MCU. The character, however, passed away as the superheroes were trying to stop Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. In 2023, Jon Favreau, while speaking to Kevin Feige, said:
“I remember you had all met with [Downey] already for like Doctor Doom or something on another project. I think he had come through on maybe Fantastic Four, so everybody sort of knew who he was.”
According to Deadline, in a recent interview with Omelete Joe Russo revealed that the idea to cast Robert as Doctor Doom in the forthcoming film came from the Marvel chief. He said:
"That was Kevin. Interestingly enough about that, that conversation was had a while ago.”
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2026.
