Ridley Scott, who is hoping to make a Bee Gees biopic, has postponed the plans for the time being. The 87-year-old filmmaker, who has been directing films and television for over five decades, shows no sign of stopping. His recent project, Gladiator II, was a major box-office success. It has been nominated for multiple Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards and is being considered for the Oscars.
Based on Gladiator II's glorious success, it is safe to say that people are still interested in the filmmaker's vision and hope to witness it on the big screens. So, his new projects are bound to generate a fair share of excitement. One of these projects is You Should Be Dancing, a musical biopic based on the Bee Gees band.
During Ridley Scott's recent interview with GQ magazine, he shared a few details about the project's postponement at Paramount:
“The deal — the studio changed the goalposts. I [Ridley Scott] said, ‘You can’t do that.’ They insisted. I said, ‘Well, I’m going to warn you, I will walk, because I will go on to the next movie.’ They didn’t believe me, and I did,” Scott said.
He further added:
“I was being asked to go too far, and I said, ‘No. Next!’ They didn’t like my deal. So I said, I’ll move on. I’m expensive, but I’m fucking good.”
Ridley Scott's Bee Gees Biopic: Everything we know so far
Ridley Scott has plans to work on a Bee Gees biopic. However, it will not be his next project.
Scott, whose Gladiator II is raking up award show nominations, recently spoke about the change of plans. According to his interview with GQ magazine, the Bee Gees biopic (tentatively titled You Should Be Dancing) will go on floors later than anticipated. He will reportedly start shooting this project with Paramount in September 2025.
During this interview, Ridley Scott also shed light on what the film will focus on. Here's what he said:
“I liked the working-class side of the Bee Gees. It’s all about competition with brothers…. And then they lose Andy—Andy OD’d at 30…. It’s more about the gift than the luck, right?… It’s a fantastic story.”
Before this project, Ridley Scott will work on The Dog Stars, a post-apocalyptic thriller set in a world where a virus wipes out the Earth. It will follow a surviving pilot, who will battle the scavengers known as Reapers. Mark L. Smith and Christopher Wilkinson are adapting the screenplay from Peter Heller’s eponymous novel. Paul Mescal was previously slated to lead this project. However, the lead role is rumored to have gone to Euphoria-fame Jacob Elordi.
