President Trump pauses tariffs; blames people for "jumping a little bit out of line"

Earlier this week, the biggest global news story was centered on President Elect Donald Trump and his implementation of international trade tariffs.

As of Wednesday April 9, President Trump announced a 90-day moratorium on the tariffs for most countries excluding China, which had its import tax bumped up to 125%.

ABC News posted Trump's reaction on their verified X page, when he was asked by journalists about the new course of action. The post read:

During White House event with auto racing champs, Pres. Trump tells reporters he decided to pause some of his tariffs because he "thought that people were jumping a little bit out of line." He added:"They were getting yippy ... a little bit afraid."

Trump’s Tariff Plan: An Update

After making his initial statement on Wednesday at the White House, Trump has said no other President would have attempted something like the Liberation Day. He said:

“We’ve got a big job to do. No other president would have done what I did... No others. I know the presidents, they wouldn’t have done it.”

He continued:

"Nothing's over yet, but we have a tremendous amount of spirit from other countries — including China. China wants to make a deal. They just don't know quite how to go about it... They're proud people."

On Wednesday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social to address the plan he has set in motion:

“BE COOL! Everything is going to work out well. The USA will be bigger and better than ever before!”

He then followed up with the announcement of a 90-day pause, and he stated that over 75 countries have reached out to representatives in the American government to negotiate revised trade agreements. Trump continued:

“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately. At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable. Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Trump noted the U.S. had never had a situation like this:

"I know what the hell I'm doing," he said, adding: “The chipmakers are coming in. They're all coming in. We've never had anything like this."
