Pixar's Coco is getting a sequel, according to a recent announcement by Disney CEO Bob Iger.

"While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure. And we can’t wait to share more soon.”

Iger shared this update during the company's shareholder meeting, per Deadline. Pixar also announced the film's release year. Here's their X (formerly Twitter) post.

So, the Coco fans will get to see another chapter, presumably in Miguel's life, in a few years. The studio has announced that it will hit theaters in 2029. However, there are no specific plot details revealed to understand what the film will explore.

However, reports say that Lee Unkrich is returning to his directorial duties after winning an Oscar for the first film. He will be joined by co-director Adrian Molina. Mark Nielsen, who won an Oscar for Toy Story 4, will serve as the producer.

Pixar and Disney have officially announced a sequel to Coco

Coco came out in 2017 and became a critical and commercial sensation. The film follows a young boy's musical journey against the wishes of his family, who banned it for many generations. Still, the boy - Miguel, listens to his inner voice and paves the way for himself as a musician. He enters the Land of the Dead to meet his great-great-grandfather, who was a famed singer at his time.

Along the way, Miguel befriends Héctor, a trickster, who helps him learn more about his family's history. His voice serenaded audiences and critics alike, leading to a whopping 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes along with two Academy Awards under its belt. The first one was in the Best Animated Feature category, while the latter was for 'Remember Me,' the song that moved audiences across the globe.

The film was a major financial success as it earned $210.4m in the United States. However, it was immensely popular in Mexico and China, two of its international markets, which cumulatively led to its $814.6M global haul. Nearly 8 years after its release, a sequel is announced, which leads to a range of reactions.

A Reddit user wondered whether a sequel was necessary.

"I love Coco but the story was pretty self-contained. I'm not sure where they would go in a sequel."

Another user echoed this thought.

"Maintaining the quality is going to be a challenge because Coco is a very open and closed story that doesn’t really have a sequel hook that won’t feel forced."

A third user shared a cautiously optimistic note.

"This’ll probably have an Inside Out 2-esque jump considering how beloved the first film still is. And if reception is similar, then it’s going to break records"
