Toy Story 5 is a part of Pixar's upcoming slate of projects. It comes nearly three decades after the world witnessed Woody and Buzz Lightyear slowly become friends. Their friendship played a major role in the formative years of many. Those who grew up with the 1995 film and its sequel are now adults. However, the film continues to have a strong emotional hold over them. The credit goes to Pete Docter, among the other artists at Pixar, who brought this story to the screen.

With the changing times, the animation is bound to change. As the technology develops, the animation styles change. The audience is also quick to figure out these changes, as they did after the Shrek 5 teaser dropped online. Pete Docter has witnessed these changes closely. He understands that the animated shows and movies for today's kids are fast-paced.

During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, he addressed the same topic in connection to Toy Story 5.

"If you go back and look at Bambi [the 1942 film] — I’m picking an extreme that’s kind of intentionally slow because it is about nature and watching the changes seasons and things — I think films have definitely sped up. Even Toy Story one to Toy Story 4, the level of visual sophistication, including the pacing, we’re just trying to keep in touch with the rhythms of the world and it’s definitely faster."

He further added,

"I will say [in] Toy Story 5, I think [writer and director] Andrew [Stanton] done a really great job of letting moments breathe in unexpected ways. Things that you’re like, wait, is this a Toy Story movie? Just some of his choices, which I think we need at this point. We’ve had four of ’em already. We got to keep people surprised, so it’s going to be fun."

Toy Story 5: Pixar CCO Pete Docter reflects on his work on the much-loved series

Over the years, Toy Story has become a cultural landmark. It has made its way into many people's hearts. Back when it started as an idea, Pixar CCO Pete Docter was a freshly graduated story artist. He is now a three-time Oscar winner for Inside Out, Up, and Soul.

“The fact that [Toy Story] hit the popular culture was never [expected]. Working on it, it was just a bunch of us nerds. It felt like working in our garage. It was a whole rental space, not really fancy, and a small team, so it was very casual and loose.”

Docter revealed during his recent conversation with THR. He will now serve as the executive producer of Toy Story 5. Andrew Stanton will direct it. Toy Story 5 is supposed to be out in 2026.
