Four decades after the success of the first film, The Toxic Avenger is finally making a modern comeback in a gory horror comedy, starring Game Of Thrones fame Peter Dinklage as the titular character. Directed by Macon Blair, the film was completed and even premiered at the Fantastic Fest in 2023, receiving widely positive reviews and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 92%.

Although fans patiently awaited the film's release, it failed to get any distribution partners and was on hold for two years. Now, after much anticipation surrounding its theatrical presence, The Toxic Avenger is finally hitting theaters on August 29, 2025.

Talking about the film's release, director Macon Blair said,

"I’m beyond grateful to the team behind ‘The Toxic Avenger’ who were so supportive and steady-handed as we searched for the perfect distribution partner for our film. It’s so cool that folks will have the chance to see this in theaters."

The film is now being distributed by Cineverse, who will be handling The Toxic Avenger's distribution. Dinklage's portrayal is said to be stellar in the film, where he portrays a janitor turned anti-hero who sets out to avenge wrongdoers who are responsible for his monstrous state while also battling corrupt minds and capitalists.

More details on The Toxic Avenger

The film is a reboot of the 1984 film and will follow the same storyline. A janitor gets himself stuck in a container of toxic substances and finds himself coming up with superpowers, which he uses to avenge wrongdoers.

With small changes here and there, for example, Dinklage's Avenger being a father and trying to save his relationship with his son, the film follows the spirit of the original version and will be a fresh take on the beloved classic. Director Blair talked about the film and said,

"It’s a fun rowdy movie you wanna see with a crowd. Mutant hero smashes bad guys with a mop: perfect entertainment for the whole family! Our goal was always to preserve the heart and spirit of the original Toxie (which was seared into my brain at a very young age) and try to make something that Troma fans would dig and at the same time do something with the character that feels fresh."

The official synopsis of the film reads,

“Armed with his signature mop, the unlikely hero battles freaks, gangsters and corrupt CEOs while trying to save his relationship with his son. The story channels the subversive gonzo energy of the original ‘Toxic Avenger’ while delivering a fresh, contemporary twist.”

Fans are excited to see Dinklage's avatar in The Toxic Avenger, which has not yet been revealed. The trailer shows his shadow as he walks towards the camera and the screen cuts to black.
